Phenolphthalein: A Versatile Chemical Compound (CAS 77-09-8)

Time:2024-11-13

Introduction

Phenolphthalein, often referred to by synonyms such as Phenolphthalien and 2,2-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)phthalide, is a prominent chemical compound with the molecular formula C20H14O4, and a molar mass of 318.32 g/mol. Known for its role in pharmaceuticals and organic synthesis, phenolphthalein is a versatile compound, typically appearing as a white to yellow-white powder.

Chemical and Physical Properties

       Density: 1.27 g/cm³ at 32°C

       Melting Point: 261-263°C

       Boiling Point: ~417.49°C

       Flash Point: 24°C

Solubility: Soluble in acetone, ethanol, and alkali solutions; slightly soluble in ether; very           slightly soluble in chloroform; insoluble in water. In dilute alkali solutions, it turns dark red,         making it effective as an acid-base indicator.

Applications

       Pharmaceutical Industry

Phenolphthalein is used as an active ingredient in medications for                    chronic constipation, available in tablet and suppository forms due to              its laxative properties.

       Organic Synthesis

This compound is instrumental in synthesizing heat-resistant                            polymers, particularly phthalazinone poly aryl ether ketone polymers.              These materials possess exceptional resistance to heat, water,                            chemical corrosion, and aging. As such, they are widely used in                          industries like electronics, transportation, aerospace, atomic energy                  engineering, and defense.

       Analytical Chemistry

In laboratories, phenolphthalein is a well-known acid-base indicator                  with a color transition range from pH 8.2 (colorless) to pH 10.0 (red).                Additionally, it serves as an indicator for non-aqueous titrations and a              reagent in chromatographic analysis.

Conclusion

The adaptability and utility of phenolphthalein make it invaluable across          various fields. Its functions as an acid-base indicator and its applications          in pharmaceuticals and polymer synthesis underscore its importance.               From medical uses to complex industrial processes, phenolphthalein                continues to be a crucial asset in scientific and industrial progress.
